FIU and Baptist Health Break Ground on Transformational Academic Medical Center in Miami

A major milestone in South Florida healthcare and medical education was recently reached as Florida International University (FIU) and Baptist Health South Florida officially broke ground on a new Academic Medical Center that will serve as a hub for patient care, physician training, research, and innovation. The project represents one of the most significant healthcare investments currently underway in Miami-Dade County and further strengthens the growing partnership between two of the region’s most influential institutions.

The new facility, known as the Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center, will be located on FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus near Southwest 107th Avenue and Southwest 10th Street. The seven-story facility is expected to encompass approximately 163,000 square feet and is scheduled to open in 2028. The project carries an estimated cost of approximately $158 million to $162 million and is being supported through state funding and institutional investment.

The Academic Medical Center is designed to bring medical education and patient care together under one roof. Future physicians, nurses, physician assistants, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals will have the opportunity to train in the same environment where patients receive treatment, creating a more integrated and collaborative approach to healthcare education.

Beyond its educational mission, the facility will significantly expand healthcare services available to residents throughout Miami-Dade County. Plans include multi-specialty outpatient care, advanced diagnostic imaging, same-day surgery services, infusion therapy, and an on-site retail pharmacy. By centralizing these services within a modern academic setting, the project aims to improve accessibility, convenience, and overall patient outcomes.

The groundbreaking is the latest chapter in the expanding alliance between FIU and Baptist Health. In recent years, both organizations announced a long-term strategic partnership focused on addressing physician shortages, enhancing medical education, growing research capabilities, and improving healthcare delivery throughout South Florida. The collaboration has already led to the creation of new residency programs and expanded opportunities for medical students and healthcare professionals.

The project also arrives at a critical time for Florida’s healthcare system. Industry projections indicate the state could face significant physician shortages over the next decade as population growth continues and healthcare demands increase. The FIU-Baptist Health partnership is designed in part to help address this challenge by training more physicians and healthcare professionals locally while attracting top medical talent and researchers to South Florida.

From an economic development perspective, the new Academic Medical Center further solidifies FIU’s role as one of Miami’s leading research and innovation institutions. The facility is expected to attract additional healthcare investment, create employment opportunities, support medical research initiatives, and strengthen Miami’s position as a growing center for healthcare excellence.

As construction begins, the project represents far more than a new building. It symbolizes a long-term investment in education, healthcare access, research, and community well-being. For students, patients, healthcare professionals, and residents throughout South Florida, the new FIU and Baptist Health Academic Medical Center promises to play a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare in Miami for decades to come.
